Garmin inReach Mini 2
Garmin launched the new satellite communicator inReach Mini 2 on the 2nd of February 2022. A much anticipated little device allowing around the globe communication. The inReach Mini 2 is the successor of the inReach Mini (as reviewed here).
I will only highlight the key changes, si if you are not familiar with the inReach family I recommend reading the inReach Mini review first. Or simply watch Garmin’s marketing video to get a short overview.
For everybody out there being quite familiar with the inReach you might ask “what has changed”? On a first glimpse, the devices look identical (except the screen). Garmin did stick to the inReach family look and physical user interface (incl. weight). The key improvements are on the inside and in the software:
longer lasting battery - instead of 90 hours, you get around 14 days (same type of operation mode)
support for additional satellite networks allowing faster GPS acquisition
electronic compass
new software and associated user interface on-screen (similar or inspired by the Fenix watches); higher resolution (176x176 pixels vs 128x128 pixels)
an always-on track-back feature allowing you to safely return to the point of origin
The device should be available as of writing for around $400 (depending on region and reseller).
Is the inReach Mini 2 for me?
If you do not yet have an inReach Mini and you would like to stay in contact with your loved ones or be able to call in an emergency at any time on the planet, the Garmin devices are (still) great. They come in a small package and offer the key features very reliably. You still need a subscription that can be pricey (depending on your requirements), but you get what you pay for. In the meantime, there are interesting alternatives out there, such as the Zoleo Satellite Communicator. I personally do not have any experience with the device but did read and hear promising aspects (especially if you are in the backcountry more often). If you are already a vivid user of the Garmin devices (e.g. Fenix/Epix line) the inReach Mini integrates nicely.
What if you already own an inReach Mini - should you upgrade? I tend to stick with my original Mini. The longer-lasting battery is tempting - all other features not so much, at least to me. Due to the fact that I always bring a battery pack on longer trips I can also recharge my Mini on-the-go. For $400 the upgrade seems not to be such a great deal.
In general, the inReach Mini 2 is a great little device I can highly recommend.
Update 01.09.2022
After almost 6 month of usage I’m highly impressed by the inReach Mini 2. The user interface is so much better than the previous one. Its more intuitive and faster. Also battery life is impressive - a three day hike can easily be covered without re-charging. The fact that the inReach Mini 2 comes with USB-C charging port is very convenient. I would even say an upgrade is well worth the investment, especially if you can get a good discount somewhere.
